Why Do merchants require Pin Numbers for debit cards in stores but not when you use them online?
2010-03-03 at 12:48 am adminYou can run your debit card if it has a MC or Visa logo on it as a credit card in a store. Just choose the credit option or have the clerk choose it. Online you do not have to give a PIN.
Answer:When doing sales online they go through as a credit card. Your pin # is supposed to be personal, if you gave it to them on line they would be able to access your account and that would be fraud.
Answer:You use a different number online called a security code located at the back of the card for online purchases. The reason is basically the processing method is different.
